“Gateway Training Camp” Phase 1
Winning in fierce competition
On the morning of May 30th, the first phase of the "Gateway Training Camp" established by Wang Jing & GH Law Firm officially started. The main speaker of the first session is the director of Wang Jing & GH, Mr. Sam Wong.
Before the course began, Director Wong first invited several colleagues on stage to share their own personal growth stories, while other colleagues from the audience voted for the most inspiring story and presented a small gift.
Allocating Resources to Customers The course begins. Director Wong first asked a question: who are the main customers?
- For the fast-food industry, who is the customer between franchisees and consumers?
- For Harvard Business School, who is the customer between teachers and students?
- For law firms, who is the customer between lawyers and people who seek legal services?
For lawyers, it is necessary to figure out who their customers are, so as to better allocate resources for the clients. After carefully analyzing the customer's positioning, Director Wong put forward an important point of view: the customer’s positioning determines the organizational structure of the firm. In other words, all organizational structures are for customer service, and we have to define our customers’ positioning to provide them with standard services.
Building Belief Systems
Director Wong first briefly explained the four systems:
- Diagnostic system: assessing progress according to scheduled evaluation plans to ensure that targets are met on time.
- Belief system: delegating decision-making power to employees and encouraging employees to seek new opportunities; conveying core values and inspiring all those involved to commit to the organization's goals.
- Boundary system: formulating the game rules to determine which actions to take and which missteps to avoid.
- Interactive system: allowing executives to focus on the uncertainties of the strategy, so that when the competitive landscape changes, they can swiftly identify threats and opportunities and respond positively.
Among them, the belief system is closely related to the core values of the enterprise. Employees want to understand the organization's goals and how they can contribute, but business leaders must help them unlock that potential. Director Wong cited the Harvard Business School's Community Values to illustrate the importance of values. Values are the soul of a company.
Then, how do core values prioritize shareholders, employees, and customers?
Director Wong took the core values of several well-known companies as an example to explain the values ranking of different enterprises. This ranking determines who the company puts first when problems occur. As long as the team is composed of people, they should have core values. Only when employees see that the company statements represent deep fundamental values, and believe in them, these statements can play a role.
And thus, the new mission for Wang Jing & GH is to provide professional and high-quality legal services to help everyone achieve their dreams.
Tracking Performance Goals As one of the four enterprise internal control systems, the diagnostic system targets key performance variables. The enterprise formulates strategic goals and invests resources. Employees perform their respective duties, and each step has its own performance indicators. If the final output does not live up to the expectations, it can be traced layer by layer to see what went wrong. This what a diagnostic system is.
Controlling Strategic Risk
If I want employees to be creative and proactive, do I tell them what to do? Or tell them what not to do?
Any company should set up a boundary system to clarify what employees should not do. Since people are always easily tempted by a lot of things, once they cross the borders, it will not only bring a variety of troubles to themselves, but also easily cause reputational risks to the enterprise. Companies should use boundary systems to control the factors that may cause reputational risk.
The combination of the boundary system and the belief system is a combination of Yin and Yang(阴阳结合) to create a dynamic tension. These systems focus on unseen opportunities in specific areas and encourage employees and managers to show their skills within a given range.
Vision>
At the end of the course, Director Wong released the new vision formulated by the partners of Wang Jing & GH to everyone present: A Foreign-related Commercial Legal Service Platform in the Greater Bay Area.
The new slogan of Wang Jing & GH was announced: 广行天下,悦法同行.
Wang Jing & GH will transform this new vision into a new strategy, make continuous progress, pursue excellence with passion, and provide customers with better legal services.
