On 27 September 2022, our Associate Lawyer Ms. Hu Liangjian was invited by the Foshan Bar Association to attend the Foshan Session of the Guangdong Commercial Legal Service Month 2022 - Foshan Entrepreneurs' Day Seminar. Ms. Hu presented a speech on the theme of the EU Trademark Protection System.
The speech covered three aspects of trademark registration, risk avoidance and countermeasures to trademark attacks. Ms. Hu gave a step-by-step introduction to the trademark system in the EU for the entrepreneurs present at the activity. At the beginning, Ms. Hu outlined the four routes of the trademark registration in the EU: single country registration, regional registration (Benelux), EUIPO registration and Madrid international registration and compared the advantages and disadvantages of the four registration methods. Ms. Hu advised our Chinese entrepreneurs to choose a suitable registration method with consideration of their own business development plan. Afterwards, Ms. Hu briefly introduced some risk-adverse measures against trademark infringement and the enforcement procedures of IP protection of the EU Customs authorities.
Finally, Ms. Hu shared a trademark invalidation case trialed in Milan Court, in which our foreign-related service team worked together with the Italian legal counsel on litigation strategy and evidence collection, in order to assist our client to defend the trademark attack brought by a third party. The outcome of the lawsuit proved to be a great success.
Many entrepreneurs listened attentively to the seminar at this event and showed great interest in the topic of EU trademark protection.
